Dance Project
Dancer Helena Lambert talks about volunteering at Djeciji Dom Mladost in BIjela in August 2016.
She was there with her colleague, circus artist Katarina Rosén and her husband, musician Mats Karlsson. Helena and Mats also had their children Imra, 10 years and Alvar, 13 years.
Throughout the stay we then had daily classes with both younger and older children, both in acrobatics, dance, music and of course we taught simple tricks with our nice homemade juggling balls and rock rings. Together with the children, we came up with nice little dances with elements of both acrobatics, juggling and rock ring tricks.
At the end of our stay, we showed our dance and circus numbers to all the adults and other children at the orphanage. It was a bit irritating before the show, but as soon as the audience entered the hall, the children’s nervousness slipped into great concentration. With a focus on top, they performed their dance and circus numbers. Mats accompanied the children’s dances on his guitar. He and the children followed each other’s rhythm and energy so empathetically and listening that a magical feeling was created in the room that I think all of us who were there felt. The show went very well and the children looked proud and happy.
We ended the show by teaching the popular game “dance stop” to the audience. All the children in the room were allowed to get up on the stage floor and let loose to Mat’s lively, playful tones and then, when the music stopped, solidify like statues. The play was much appreciated and we could have lasted a long time if it were not for the upcoming barbecue party that ended both the show night and our project at the orphanage.
